MVSE-301 (B)
M.E./M.Tech., III Semester
Examination, November 2023
Advance Foundation Engineering
(Elective-I)
Time: Three Hours
Maximum Marks: 70
Note: i) Attempt any five questions.
ii) All questions carry equal marks.
1.
a) With the help of a diagram explain the terms with reference to soil sampler-area ratio, inside clearance, outside clearance.
b) Explain with the help of a neat sketch the electrical resistivity method of soil exploration.
2.
a) 'Significant depth of exploration' is the key factor of site investigation. Is this statement true? What are the empirical guidelines for the determination of the depth of exploration?
b) State the following in brief:
i) Indirect method of soil exploration
ii) Soil samplers and sampling techniques
3.
a) What are the various types of piles and their uses?
b) A square concrete pile is driven into a homogeneous consolidated clay deposit (Cu = 40 kN/m² and N = 20). Determine allowable load (F.S. = 3.0).
4.
a) Explain the concept of critical depth as related to determination of point bearing and skin friction resistance in pile.
b) Explain how twisting of a building can be avoided. What problem is expected if the distance between centre of mass and centre of rigidity is high?
5.
a) What are the different field conditions in which construction of coffer dam is required? Mention the types of coffer dam required to be constructed as per the field conditions with neat sketch.
b) Why it is required to perform the stability analysis of cofferdam? What are different conditions for which stability analysis of an earthen cofferdam is required?
6.
a) Discuss the use of penetration test for the estimation of load carrying capacity of piles.
b) What is negative skin friction? What is its effect on piles?
7.
a) Design of friction pile group to carry a load of 3000 kN including the weight of the pile cap at a site where the soil is uniform clay to a depth of 20 m, underlain by rock. Average unconfined compressive strength of the clay is 70 kN/m².The clay may be assumed to be of normal sensitivity and normally loaded, with liquid limit 60%. A factor of safety of 3.0 is required against shear failure.
b) Briefly describe about design of anchored bulk head by fixed-earth method including equivalent beam method.
8.
a) General design criteria for machine foundations.
b) Interlock stresses
c) Ultimate bearing capacity of pile groups
d) Core recovery and RQD
e) Electrical resistivity method
