Advanced Foundation Engineering
(Elective - II)
Time : Three Hours
Maximum Marks: 70
Note:
- Attempt any five questions.
- All questions carry equal marks.
1. a)
Discuss in details the factors that affect the bearing capacity of shallow foundation and failure patterns of shallow foundation.
b)
Determine the ultimate bearing capacity of footing by Terzaghi's analysis, which is 1.5 m wide and its base at a depth of 1 m. If the ground water table is located:
- At a depth of 0.5 m below the ground surface.
- At a depth of 0.5 m below the base of the footing.
2. a)
Explain the following terms in details:
- Group action of pile foundations
- Negative skin friction
- Under-reamed piles
b)
Design the friction pile group to carry a load of 3000 kN including the weight of the pile cap at a site where the soil is uniform clay to a depth of 20m, underlain by rock. Average unconfined compressive strength of the clay is 70 kN/m2. The clay may be assumed to be the normal sensitivity and normally loaded, with liquid limit 60%. A factor of safety of 3 is required against shear failure.
3. a)
What are the functions and uses of the geosynthetic materials?
b)
What is geosynthetic engineering? How it is different from geotechnical engineering?
4. a)
What are the components of a well foundation? What are the forces acting on a well foundation structure?
b)
Describe the elements of a bridge foundations in details.
5. a)
What are marine structures and their components?
b)
What are the advantages and limitations of using gravity wall in civil engineering projects?
6. a)
Define and explain the term geosynthetics and geotextiles. Differentiate between woven and non-woven geotextiles.
b)
What is reinforced soil? Discuss the basic concept and strength characteristics of reinforced soil.
7. a)
A 450 mm wide concrete pile, square in section and 15 m long, is driven in a deep deposit of uniform clay. Laboratory unconfined compression tests on undisturbed samples indicate and average qu value of 75 kN/m2. Calculate the ultimate load capacity of the pile, Take α = 0.8 and Nc = 9.0.
b)
Write short notes on the following terms:
- Geo-grid
- Geo-web
- Geo-composites
8. a)
What is tilt and shift in well foundation, explain in details?
b)
Explain Balla's bearing capacity theory. How it is different from Terzaghi's theory?
