(Elective-II)

Time: Three Hours Maximum Marks : 70

Note: i) Attempt any five questions.

ii) All questions carry equal marks.

1.
a) Derive the basic equation of energy for the flow machines.
b) Explain the performance of pumps.
2.
a) How does a centrifugal pump import pressure energy to the fluid. Explain the mechanism involved.
b) Derive the expression for NPSH.
3.
a) Sketch the velocity triangles at the outlet of centrifugal pump with radial and forward vane.
b) What is cavitation effect? How it produced in compressor?
4.
Describe with a neat sketch the working of vane blower compressor and show its P-V diagram. Discuss it's application also.
5.
An axial flow compressor with compression ratio of 1.4 draws air at 22°C. The compression process is approximated as an isentropic process. The stay nation condition at this stage is 300K. The blade velocity in being 200 m/sec. Draw velocity triangles for an air angle of 20°C and determine vane angles. Also calculate the degree of reaction.
6.
a) Differentiate between a fan and blower.
b) How turbo blowers work? Explain with neat diagram also write its characteristics.
7.
a) Explain the performance curves of a typical jet pump.
b) What is the importance of cooling tower? Explain with neat diagram.
8.
Write short notes on any two:
  • a) Euler's vortex theory
  • b) Priming effect
  • c) Turbo blowers
