Time: Three Hours Maximum Marks: 70

Note: i) Attempt any five questions.

ii) All questions carry equal marks.

1.
a) Explain the one line diagram of a simple power system and its equivalent impedance diagram.
b) Explain the algorithm for formation of bus impedance matrix.
2.
a) Discuss the network sensitivity factors with a suitable conceptual example and its applications.
b) Explain the solution of voltage instability in a modern power system.
3.
Discuss the proximity indicators in a power system. Compare the convergence of the Gauss-Seidel, decoupled and Newton power flow algorithms with the help of PV curves.
4.

Write technical short notes on any two of the following:

i) Thyristor Controlled Reactor with Fixed Capacitor (TCR-FC)
ii) Thyristor Switched Capacitors (TSC)
iii) Combined TCR and TSC Compensator
5.
a) Explain the basic principle and operation of TCSC with suitable diagram.
b) Discuss the various modes of operation of TCSC with relevant diagrams for each mode.
6.

A synchronous generator is rated 645 MV A, 24 kV, 0.9 pf lagging. It has a synchronous reactance 1.2 Ω. The generator is feeding full load at 0.9 pf lagging at rated voltage. Calculate:

a) Excitation emf (Ef) and power angle
b) Reactive power drawn by the load

Carry out calculations in pu form and convert the result to actual values.

7.
Explain Static Var Compensator with suitable Single Line diagram with its control system block diagram and also compare the various SVC's.
8.

Write a technical short note on any one of the following

i) Analysis of variable reactance model
ii) Analysis of transient stability model of TCSC.
